Feminist Criticism

James Joyce, I think is a perfect example of a feminist. He touches on subjects, such as Lily referring to the men only being palaver and only getting what they want out you.  Joyce touch bases on how a female feels but he also made us as readers think critically about the message he was getting across in " The Dead".  I had a hard time figuring it out.  Just like us women, were hard at figuring out at times.

  1. I can agree with you when you say you had a hard time figuring it out, but I feel like I had a hard time figuring out the place of feminism in The Dead as opposed to the message Joyce was trying to get out. Even after I read the feminist criticism, I still failed to see the reason for the criticism of The Dead. The female characters, to me, did not seem to stand out, nor did I seem to get an anti-feminist feel from the text. I don't know, I was generally confused by the criticism and why it was felt to chose The Dead as it's text to focus on.

  2. I didn't see Joyce as a feminist. I actually sort of saw him as a bit misogynistic. But, I always love to see the counter argument. I didn't even think about the part where Lily said that men are palaver. That also makes me think about when one of Gabriel's aunt got kicked out of the chorus and replaced with a man & how she called the pope out on it & was very upset about it. I guess that could be another example of his feminist beliefs?
